New research from Gartner indicates that the CFO - not the CIO or CEO - often calls the shots when it comes to organizational IT decisions.

About 33% of IT departments report to the CEO. Just 16% report to the COO.

53% of CFOs surveyed say they'd like to have IT departments report direct to them.

18% of organizations position the CFO as the main decision maker for IT.

11% designate the CIO as the top IT decision maker.

5% of organizations say the CFO has no role in IT investment decisions.

IT's strengths, according to finance:

Understanding/working with business needs (16%), customer focus (11%).

IT's weaknesses:

Communications (14%), project management (10%).
