Health-care reform will require billions in IT investment by government agencies to achieve legislative mandates, according to a new report from INPUT.

55% of total federal improper payments in FY2009 tracked to Medicare ($24.1 billion), Medicaid ($18.1 billion).

$1 billion or more will be spent by the fed Health Department on IT to address Medicaid, Medicare and other areas.

$1.65 billion:

minimum IT investment will be needed for IRS to handle verification/documentation for premium/cost-sharing subsidies.

16,500 new employees could be hired by IRS to handle increased demands.

Top IT Solutions in Demand:

Records management, imaging hardware/software, billing systems.

Other Significant Needs:

Diagnostic equipment, larger databases/storage systems, mobile software, Web portals.
