WTC Survivors Find Solace in Virtual Reality

Animated images of the September 11th attacks are being used to help survivors cope with anxiety stemming from that day.

Dr. JoAnn Difede, director of the Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Studies Program at Weill Cornell Medical College has studied virtual realty tools to help patients with more common phobias, like fear of heights or public speaking. She found that the approach also seems to work for this traumatic experience. So far, about 25 patients have used simulations of New York's fallen twin towers to help control panic, sleep disorders, or other psychological problems.
