Business Analytics Solutions: What Are They Good For?

Business analytics solutions are being used as an effective tool for decision making at a majority of organizations, according to a new Bloomberg Businessweek Research Services survey sponsored by SAS, a provider of business analytics applications. Organizations have benefited from increased profitability, reduced cost, improved risk management, process optimization and fast decision making, according to the survey, in which 930 business professionals worldwide were polled in May 2011. Business analytics solutions are more pervasive in worldwide enterprises today than it was in 2009, the report says. According to the survey results, companies gaining the most value from business analytics share several characteristics, including: a top-down embrace of analytics by senior executives; putting the right analytics talent in place; improving data management and governance; and deploying the right analytic tools. Here are 10 highlights from the survey:

Strategic analysis
60% of respondents say their organizations are currently using business analytics solutions for strategy/planning purposes, the most commonly cited use of analytics.

Widespread use
About one third of respondents (34%) say their enterprise has integrated the use of analytics across the entire organization.

Business units
39% of respondents say their organizations are using analytics only in specific business units or divisions.

Non-players
Only 3% of respondents say their organizations are not using business analytics at all.

On the rise
58% of respondents say the overall usage of business analytics at their organization has increased "to some extent" during the past 12 months.

15% of respondents say analytics usage has "increased significantly" in their enterprise over the past 12 months.

Early Adoptersamong the respondents whose companies have significantly increased their use of business analytics (which the researchers classify as “early adopters”):
73% are using business reporting/KPIs/dashboards,
70% are using spreadsheets
67% are using forecasting.

Making decisions
Organizations on average use analytics for about 40% of their decision-making; the majority of decisions are still based on business experience and intuition.

Cost reductions
37% of respondents say their organizations are addressing, or hope to address, cost reductions by using business analytics.

Effective tool
75% of respondents say the use of business analytics has been "very effective" or "somewhat effective" in helping them make decisions.
