CIOs Still Spending



Times are tough and many organizations may be in survival mode, but CIOs are still spending, according to a recent survey conducted by Robert Half International. The firm’s research shows that the majority of organizations still plan on investing on IT initiatives in the next 12 months.

Robert Half International recently asked 1,400 CIOs at United States-based companies with 100 or more employees: "Which areas, if any, will your IT department be investing in over the next 12 months?"

  • Approximately 70 percent of CIOs reported that they plan on investing in IT initiatives in the coming year.
  • Information security initiatives were the most popular among those planned. Approximately 43 percent of CIOs had security projects booked.
  • Virtualization came in second, with 28 percent of IT leaders planning consolidation projects. That number bumped up to 38 percent at large and midsize companies.
  • Closely tied with virtualization, it was no surprise that a similar percentage of CIOs—27 percent—had data center efficiency projects in the works.
  • Approximately 26 percent of organizations claimed they were investing in VoIP this year.
  • CIOs at over a quarter of organizations said they were investing in a shift to Software as a Service (SaaS).
  • About 20 percent of CIOs said their organizations would shell out greenbacks for green IT.
  • CIOs at 19 percent of organizations plan on beefing up business intelligence capabilities.
  • Investments in social networking are also on the books for the coming year at approximately 18 percent of organizations.
  • More money will be poured into Web 2.0. About 17 percent of CIOs reported related projects coming down the pike.
  • CIOs at 16 percent of organizations plan on spending more cash to bring in outsourced personnel.
