  • Centralized system management and maintenance.

EHRs are complex. A distributed model would require physician practices to have specialized expertise in house. SaaS provides access to industry experts in healthcare IT.

  • Better security.

Centralized, controlled access ensures a best-practices security model, and frees up physicians to care for patients and not worry about the latest patch or malware exploit.

  • Rapid response for system growth and change.

The cloud allows us to be movable, flexible and modular. Virtualization allows us to focus system resources dynamically and without end-user impact.

  • Cost avoidance.

Cloud allows us to adapt a large infrastructure without having to spend additional dollars on hardware.

  • Portability.

Given that the environment exists within a cloud, it is virtually accessible from anywhere. This adds greater convenience when physician offices move or open new locations.

  • Disaster recovery.

A disaster in one office doesn't destroy that office's records, and a disaster at one location shouldn't impact any other locations using the system.

  • Project flexibility.

Leveraging the cloud allows the project to adapt with hardware or software and not burden practices with changes.

  • Testing and development.

The virtualized environment gives the EHR system the opportunity to create multiple testing and development systems without having to purchase additional hardware.

  • Increased availability.

Virtualization allows us to keep systems up, even when a hardware failure occurs. The site is not dependent on a hardware model and the guest servers are portable.

  • Lower management complexity.

Once the server farm is in place, managing the environment becomes simpler. There are fewer physical servers to maintain, and less concern regarding firmware changes or hardware discrepancies.
