One of the major challenges IT executives face is communicating their challenges and concerns to line-of-business mangers and other non-IT leaders. A recent survey of CIOs conducted by the Society for Information Management examined IT leader's top priorities in three major categories: strategy & organization, governance & compliance, and technology & infrastructure.

- Strategy & Organization
CIOs believe that it is most important for executive leadership to understand concerns about IT-business alignment issues. This was ranked by 52.84% as the top priority. - Strategy & Operations
IT strategy concerns were rated as the top priority for executive awakening by just under 25% of CIOs. - Strategy & Operations
Approximately 16% of CIOs said they thought it was most important that other leaders understand concerns around business process management. - Strategy & Operations
6.25% of IT leaders thought it was most important for other leaders to understand concerns about IT organization considerations. - Governance & Compliance
Top priorities for CIOs are explaining the importance of the value of IT (28%), the role of the CIO (14%) and how IT governance processes work (14%). - Governance & Compliance
CIOs believe executives need a better understanding of security and risk management. Approximately 11% of CIOs ranked security as a top priority and 10% ranked risked management on top. - Technology & Infrastructure
A majority of CIOs (58%) said they most wanted executive leadership to better understand the concerns related to managing change within the technology infrastructure. - Technology & Infrastructure
17% of CIOs said executives need to understand concerns about integrating IT systems. - Technology & Infrastructure
Approximately 15% of IT leaders said passing along information about managing emerging technology was a top priority. - Technology & Infrastructure
10% said concerns about IT architecture should be addressed up the chain of command.
