Oh, how the enterprise is changing. Just a few years ago, smartphones were just one small tool in a corporate world that hadn't quite realized the full potential of a mobile workforce. Nowadays, smartphones and other mobile devices have become an integral component in the financial health of a company. This was made abundantly clear in a new study conducted by Kelton Research and commissioned by Sybase. The study, based on survey responses from 250 IT managers, reveals that mobile enterprise applications (and mobility in general) are expected to become extremely important to IT decision-makers in 2011 and beyond.

Approximately 45% of respondents believe bringing mobile enterprise applications to their operations and managing the sheer number of programs they will make available to employees, top their priorities this year.

Respondents say this is the important factor driving the adoption of mobile applications in the enterprise.

Security is the most common reason given for not allowing mobile applications in the enterprise. Three quarters of respondents are concerned about the security of their data when employees start using apps.

More than eight in 10 respondents believe that hosting mobile applications online will be “beneficial” to their operations.

55%

Just over half of respondents say their companies have a plan to forecast and implement mobility in the coming years; 45% say they have no plan in place.
