IT Faces Quandary Whether to Allow Use of Personal Devices

Administering a myriad of handheld devices can easily create nightmares for IT managers.

It's an IT executive's dilemma.

On the one hand, IT managers don't want to curb employee creativity and productivity by banning personal devices at work. On the other hand, letting workers choose whatever devices they want creates a myriad of problems for IT organizations, including tech support and security, to name a few.

Still, a vast majority of workers want to use the same devices for work and play, and often it seems employers can do little about it.

Corporate IT hasn't seen anything similar to this since the early days of the PC, when renegade machines began showing up on desktops like mushrooms after a heavy rain. "This reminds me of when white boxes were coming in and the glass houses ignored them," independent consultant Judy Brown says.
