Grocery Chain Testing Biometric Payment

Cub Foods has started testing a biometric payment system in four of its stores, claiming it will allow customers to leave their debit or credit cards at home and will make payments faster.

The system, known as Pay By Touch, can access a customer’s checking account when a finger is scanned.

To enroll in the program, a shopper has to show a valid driver’s license and a voided check with an account number. Cub Foods then scans the shopper’s finger to come up with a set of "data points," which is different than a fingerprint, said Trish Belisle, retail technology manager for Supervalu, which owns and franchises Cub stores.
