What you don't know about IT security could hurt you -- and your company. According to Symantec's 2011 State of Security Survey, IT security is the biggest risk companies face, ranking ahead of the theft of physical goods, terrorism and natural disasters. Mobility, social media and good old-fashioned hackers remain the biggest cyber threats. How can companies best mitigate these threats and keep their employees and their data safe from attack? Here, we highlight 10 survey findings to help you decide how your company stacks up against your peers. The survey was conducted in April and May 2011 by Applied Research on behalf of Symantec. Applied Research received survey responses from 3,300 executives in 36 countries, including C-level professionals, strategic and tactical IT executives, and individuals in charge of IT resources.

Prevalent attacks
71% of respondents reported that their company experienced cyber attacks in the past 12 months.

Attacks Increase
More than one fifth of respondents (21%) said they saw the frequency of cyber attacks increase in the past 12 months.

Cyber Attacks Will Cost You
92% of respondents said their company suffered financial losses from cyber attacks.

The top 3 losses as a result of a cyber attack were (percent respondents):
• IT downtime – 43%
• Theft of employee’s identity information – 20%
• Intellectual property theft – 19%

The High Cost of Cyber Attacks
20% of respondents at large enterprises reported that their company suffered at least $271,000 in damages as the result of a cyber attack.

How Attacks Occur
Malicious code attacks are the most frequent, affecting 22% of respondents.

Social Networks
20% of respondents experienced social engineering attacks, including phishing, spoofing and pre-texting.

Inside Jobs
Well-meaning insiders are a source of concern for 46% of respondents, but cyber attacks by hackers are the top security fear for 49% of respondents.

That iPhone Could Be Your Downfall
47% of respondents said mobile computing makes cyber security more difficult than it was in the past.

How to Respond?
What are companies doing to deal with cyber threats? (percent respondents)

• Increasing security budgets: 41%
