Aging Hardware Drives IT Spending at Small and Mid-sized Companies

A recent survey of small businesses shows a moderate increase in IT spending ahead. Conducted by Spiceworks, the survey questioned the IT spending habits and budget plans of 1,250 small businesses. The modest gains are driven in part by a need to refresh long-held hardware.

70% of SMB IT departments will make do with the same or fewer staff members in 2010.

80% of SMB IT pros will buy some type of new hardware in 2010.

Almost 50% of SMB IT budgets are allocated to hardware, mainly to replace legacy assets that have long overstayed their expiration dates.

Nearly 25% of desktops in an SMB IT network are more than four years old, an increase of 14% from last year.

14% Increase in the number of servers at least four years old.

22% Increase in laptops more than four years old.

44% of SMBs surveyed currently use virtualization.

21% expect to invest in new virtualization software in 2010.

25% of participants said they plan to use cloud computing in the next six months.

Companies with fewer than 20 employees plan to outlay the largest IT budget and staff increases among all SMBs.
