According to recent figures released by the World Bank, Americans are by far the most generous when it comes to donating to charities and other goodwill organizations. In 2005, the latest year for which figures are available, Americans donated the equivalent of 1.67 percent of the U.S. gross domestic productroughly $205 billion. And that's not counting the $40 billion Warren Buffet donated to the Gates foundation in July 2006.
