2. Protecting the Brand. Protecting a brand's online image is an area where CIOs can be particularly valuable. Your IT department understands the challenge of building widgets, gadgets and other apps for different platforms such as iGoogle, Facebook, mobile phones and desktops.

Your team already is monitoring viruses and other security risks that can undermine the customer experience that the marketing department is trying so hard to improve. You can raise red flags and help set the rules of engagement in social networks.

3. Protecting Data. The information that flows through online marketing campaigns could be subject to Electronic Discovery Law.  At least 41 U.S. District Courts now require compliance with special local rules, forms or guidelines addressing the discovery of electronically stored information.

The CIO is in the best position to create and maintain the architecture required to collect, store and retrieve that data.
