An annual state-of-the-CIO survey from Gartner’s Executive Programs reveals that today’s senior technology executives are experiencing a period of transition. They realize that they’re only beginning to fully exploit tech’s potential, and are fully immersed in the ever-changing challenges created by mobility, big data, social media and the cloud. Fortunately, the resulting “CIO Agenda Survey” report conveys a sense of organizational recognition that the modern CIO brings more value than simply that of a traditional “IT boss,” especially when it comes to taking on new roles to find newer and better ways to pursue digital strategies and deliver upon business-benefiting goals. "Digital technologies provide a platform to achieve results, but only if CIOs adopt new roles and behaviors to find digital value," says Mark McDonald, group vice president and Gartner Fellow. "IT needs new tools if it hopes to hunt for technology-intensive innovation and harvest raised business performance from transformed IT infrastructure, operations and applications. Without change, CIOs and IT consign themselves to tending a garden of legacy assets and responsibilities." More than 2,000 CIOs worldwide participated in the research.
