As the head of IT, a CIO must renovate the IT core to foster digital innovation, according to a new Gartner study. The study also concluded that as a business leader, a CIO must develop a strategic vision of how digital technology will transform the business and know how to implement that vision. "CIOs must bring 'what' proposals to the executive table, not just provide the 'how,' whether taking the lead in digital innovation are acting in a support role," the study said. Moreover, they must partner with other digital leaders to shape and codify their collective vision and proposals. And they must also take stock of IT's ability to meet digital responsibilities, build a digital engine and delegate this important work. Ultimately, the CIO must lead, promote and support digital business innovation and the capabilities required for the enterprise to create new value for stakeholders, the study revealed. But this means operating out of CIOs' comfort zones, the study warned.
