Research firm Gartner's 2012 Symposium showcased some of the most important trends and data affecting the IT world. The symposium is home to speakers who take time to discuss trends, share information. Peter Sondergaard, head of global research at Gartner, shared insights into the key factors that are driving innovation and investment in the IT world, leaving few topics off the table during his discussion. Sondergaard touted the growth of the cloud and examined app downloads across the enterprise. He talked about Apple's iPad and how important it is for corporate users. Sondergaard even tapped into the importance of Windows 8—not today, but a couple of years down the road. Simply put, his findings were enlightening, and will go a long way in helping CIOs establish a better understanding of the things that matter most in the corporate world. IT spending will soar in the coming years, with the compound annual growth rate likely to hit 3.8%. In 2016, total IT spending could hit $4 trillion.
