Workers Still Value Personal Touch in Digital Age

Constant Contact  While 36% of employees will use a cell phone to contact family while at work, one in five will now text.

CIOs oversee tech departments that are more connected than ever, thanks to multiple mobile devices, BYOD and cloud computing. And you may think–especially after having a staff meeting during which some employees were clearly texting, instant messaging or e-mailing while you were talking–that all of this is getting a bit out of hand. But take heart: Your workers still prefer face-to-face communication in many circumstances, especially when there’s important news to discuss, according to a recent survey from TrackVia. The findings present a wide range of perspectives about how digital-age tools have impacted the very culture of an office environment. And while e-communication is generally viewed as a positive thing, it’s no substitute for personal contact. "It's clear that tools like e-mail and instant messaging help increase workplace productivity, but they don't replace personal collaboration," says Charles Var, vice president of marketing for TrackVia, an applications solution company. "Context also matters as people's preference for communication appears to change based on what they're doing." An estimated 300 professionals who use computers and software daily took part in the research.
