11 Mind-Boggling Predictions for the Digital Age

A Well-Equipped World There will be nearly three networked devices for every person on earth in 2017. As of 2012, there were nearly two devices per person.

It's enough to bring out the inner geek in all of us: The very latest Visual Networking Index from Cisco is packed full of eyebrow-raising statistics about global IP traffic, online video consumption, mobile growth and other key topics that will drive enterprise conversations for the next several years. How wild will it get? For starters, the gigabyte equivalent of all the movies ever made will cross global IP networks every three minutes by 2017. And it would take an individual more than 5 million years to watch the amount of video that will cross global IP networks each month by that year. CIOs will also be interested in how big business-generated traffic will get, among other interesting, forward-spinning data points. "[The research] showcases the seemingly insatiable demand for bandwidth around the globe," says Doug Webster, vice president of product and solutions marketing for Cisco. "With more and more people, things, processes and data being connected in the Internet of Everything, the intelligent network and the service providers who operate them are more relevant than ever." The index is compiled from a combination of analyst projections, in-house estimates and forecasts, and direct data collection. For more about the index report, click here
