How Document Management Drives Workers Crazy

Mistaken Situation  47% say they've worked on the wrong version of a document.

Knowledge workers are fed up with document-management snafus, according to a recent survey released by Perforce Software. The vast majority say these problems have caused them to lose precious productivity. They often can't find the file they're looking for. And then, after they think they have accessed it, many discover that they've been working on the wrong document. Given the frustration over these and other "versioning" issues, it's quite common for grown professionals to scream at their computers, give up on a pending project entirely or head to the nearest bar, findings reveal. "Current collaboration practices and systems do not mitigate the versioning issues that hinder an organization's ability to collaborate on documents," says Christopher Seiwald, CEO and founder of Perforce, which helps companies manage digital assets such as software code, multimedia and images. "Most business teams have yet to adequately address the root of the problem—version management." More than 1,000 knowledge workers in the U.S. and the U.K. took part in the research, which was conducted by Harris Interactive.
