It enables you to literally hold in your hand the same amount of computing power that the world’s fastest supercomputers commanded four decades ago. It has created a brave, new world in which machines communicate with each other, relying far less on human input. It can allow your department to perform any conceivable IT function with the click of a button, all within an as-a-service purchasing model. In this case, we’re referring to what’s commonly described today as “disruptive technology.” Indeed, this term, which too often mistakenly comes across as yet another techie buzz phrase, describes a staggeringly broad range of substantive innovation taking place within every conceivable industry. To convey the vast impact of it all, the McKinsey & Company has produced a comprehensive report that details these numerous, ongoing advancements. The resulting report produced by the McKinsey Global Institute, “Disruptive Technologies: Advances That Will Transform Life, Business and the Global Economy,” also illustrates the bottom-line effect and potential future applications of the following ten technologies selected from McKinsey’s list. As a CIO, it’s perfectly understandable to sometimes feel overwhelmed by all of these tech shifts, with a sense of “Next New Thing fatigue,” as the report describes. But you must pay attention to them due to their potential to transform business processes, improve customer service, increase productivity and lower operating costs.
