Challenger, Gray & Christmas believes this number could be the signal for industry turnaround-job cuts dropped by 60% compared to last quarter's bloodbath.

Last quarter's 84,217 announced job losses was the most significant quarterly cut since the last quarter of 2002.

Because last quarter was so brutal, first half of the year job loss figures this year are still the highest six month numbers in seven years.

The total 118,108 jobs lost January through June this year are more than double the 50,989 jobs lost during the same period in 2008.

However, this year's first-half totals are half that of 2001's losses during the same period. That year the economy lost 313,389 jobs during that time.

Challenger, Gray & Christmas broke tech sector losses down by three categories: telecom, computer and electronics jobs.

Telecom fared best last quarter, losing only 1,876 jobs. The computer sector did worst, losing 19,881 positions. Meanwhile, electronics jobs lost last quarter equaled 12,134.
