Cloud Storage What Every CIO Needs to Know

Moving data storage to the cloud is not without its challenges. The CIO needs to be aware of the very real data risks involved in cloud storage, understand the needs of the various enterprise applications that will be accessing that data, form an exit strategy, and have a proven recovery plan for dealing with service outages such as the one experienced earlier this year by Amazon. Netflix, with its "chaos monkey" approach, is a great example of an enterprise that constantly preps for failure and as a result had its service remain relatively unaffected by the Amazon outage. Trust in the cloud is a major concern for enterprise CIOs, but this is counterbalanced by the enormous computing power and compelling business case that cloud storage offers. Rather than making a huge capital investment, cloud storage enables the enterprise to purchase services and capacity on demand. This leaves room for a "startup culture" in even the largest global companies. This allows IT and other departments to innovate, with a level of agility and flexibility that has never before been available, to create new applications and solutions that use these vast stores of cloud data to meet real business needs.

The Big Data Conundrum

When it comes to �big data,� CIOs are caught in a trap of �can't live with it/can't live without it,� according to a survey conducted by business technology services vendor Avanade. While the modern-day crush of information generated by e-mail, word docs, spreadsheets and other content sources is difficult for CIOs to manage, it's also considered mission-critical for organizations. The complexity of this data overload is only projected to increase. In fact, the worlds volume of data doubles every 18 months, and enterprise data in all forms will grow 650 percent over the next five years, according to industry forecasts. All of this is leaving organizations overwhelmed, according to the survey, with too much of the data being irrelevant, outdated or otherwise �bad.� Survey respondents also say it's difficult for them to find the right people who can provide the right information at the right time. In fact, more than one quarter of respondents report that theyve lost business because they couldn't access key information when needed. Yet, when asked, these same execs say they only want more � not less � data to work with. More than 540 CIOs, IT decision-makers and C-level executives took part in the Avanade survey. - �...

New Tools for Measuring Data Center Power Efficiency

Measuring data center power efficiency is a critical aspect of understanding Green Computing and your ability to run a Green Data Center. There are three new tools for measuring the efficiency of how much power you use, and how much is actually being driven to the IT hardware, and not used for other tasks. Power Utilization Efficiency (PUE), Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE), and SI-POM are the most common ways to ascertain the metrics concerning how much power used in the data center is being used to power IT hardware, and how much is used for other tasks. The highly efficient data center cannot be run without these kinds of metrics that show actual usage levels and changes in how power is used.
