If youre struggling to identify what you really want from your professional career, youre not alone. In fact, its been my experience that this is a very difficult question for nearly all CIOs to answer. - The reason CIOs (and most IT
professionals for that matter) dont get what they want is because they
dont know what they want.
Think Im pushing it?
Does it feel to you like Im being a bit heavy handed? OK. Go ahead. Ask yourself. What do you really want from your professional career?

The velocity of technological change is providing improved business functionality for organizations that have previously operated with a smaller internal IT footprint. But this change comes at a cost, creating a new set of risks that CIOs must effectively manage to be successful. - David Nichols is CIO Services Leader, Geoff Vickrey is Enabling
Technologies Leader, and Bob Sydow is Area Center of Excellence Leader
for Ernst amp; Young LLP

Managing Information in Litigation: How to Avoid Spending a Fortune

The costs of preserving, searching and reviewing information in litigation can be staggering. What costs a dollar to store on a hard drive can easily cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to search and review for a lawsuit. Ignoring or destroying salient information prior to or during a lawsuit can lead to losing a case regardless of the merits of the actual claim and spending a small fortune litigating the issue of whether you have met your discovery obligations. The solution? Take steps to budget, hire and manage information properly on the front end; corral discovery costs; and avoid Luddite lawyers. - A bevy of published articles bemoan the escalating costs of discovery -- the process during litigation in which the parties are required to exchange information. Given the informational nature of discovery, the CIO should help effectively manage information and control the associated costs.
The dis...

The IT team at Northeastern Illinois is severely overburdened with the challenge of managing existing IT services while also addressing new educational and operational requirements, says Kim Tracy, Executive Director of the school's University Technology Services. Enter cloud computing. "By moving IT services to the cloud, we can offload the complexity of the current IT environment and improve services to our faculty and students and provide the best learning experience possible," he says. - For many CIOs, the following scenario is all too familiar: You step into a new role at an organization and inherit a highly fragmented IT environment and are immediately charged with consolidating processes, infrastructure and services. Such was the case when I arrived at Northeastern Illinois Univ...

When it comes to data, too much of a good thing can indeed become a bad thing. These five tips will help you make sense of the exponentially expanding volume of data we're all facing. - I have memories of my mother telling me when I was a kid not to bite off more than I could chew. That seems to be the biggest challenge with big data.
There is so much of it, we cant seem to figure out how to capture it, store it, search it, analyze it or visualize it. It is simply overwhelming. Wh...

Its interesting to note that the performance of today's comparatively larger storage arrays isnt intrinsically much better than I was getting in 1980 -- maybe twice as fast for data retrieval. There's just a lot more data being stored, and the cost per stored bit is way down. Some of the same operational challenges are still around, too. - When I first started running programs that dealt with big data meaning both a lot of data about something or somebody and a lot of things or people to have some data about big was actually pretty small.
I once built a system for a modern 300-bed hospital that ran everything (including patient reco...

We have two factors intersecting: a never-before-seen wealth of data from transactions and interactions, plus a new level of technology innovation to drive down costs. There are four key technology considerations for todays CIO looking to capitalize on big (and diverse) data. - Big data is a reality for every IT group whose job is to provide the business with information about its customers, prospects and markets in a manner that is quick, easy and efficient. Balancing this with capital and operational cost constraints is the hardest part. The good news is that we have two...

If so, then you've fallen prey to the three false and highly limiting beliefs about IT leadership. These three beliefs are held by IT pros on all rungs of the organizational ladder. - What exactly is IT leadership?
Since I spend an awful lot of my time teaching leadership skills to IT professionals and managers, its a question I get asked on a regular basis. For a while, I answered the question with a synthesized review of different academic theories of leadership and how thes...

In far too many cases, corporate policy hasnt kept up with whats actually happening. Here's a look at the emerging issues CIOs will have to contend with in 2012. - We have all seen the steady blurring of the lines between work and nonwork over the past couple of decades.
