According to a recent survey from Hydrogen Group, 72% of employers worldwide expect their senior executives to have international business experience and take a global approach to meeting business objectives. The book "Being Global: How to Think, Act, and Lead in a Transformed World" (Harvard Business Review Press/available now) can help CIOs develop the business skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace. Authors Ángel Cabrera and Gregory Unruh contend that success in the international business world requires a complex set of skills, many of which are related to business and technology. Others, however, relate to local culture and politics. The authors present a series of questions that can help CIOs assess if they have what it takes to go global, and what steps they can take to get there if they're falling short. Ángel Cabrera is president of Thunderbird School of Global Management and president-elect of George Mason University. Gregory Unruh is a professor of global business at Thunderbird School of Global Management and director of the school's Lincoln Center for Ethics in Global Management.
