According to new research from IDC, the IT world will transition to what’s being called the “third platform” in 2013. Comprised of mobile computing, cloud services, social networking and big data analytics, the third platform encompasses practically all that today’s IT decision-makers care about. Ironically, the third platform might even be what the majority of folks on the business side most care about.
It’s easy to see why the third platform is so important. Devices like smartphones, tablets and eReaders are increasingly entering the corporate world as companies see them as viable options to keep employees working even when they’re not in the office. The cloud is yet another opportunity for companies to take advantage of the so-called “live-to-work” mentality permeating the world. Nowadays, work can be done anywhere and everywhere. If it weren’t for the growth of the third platform, many companies wouldn’t be as productive and profitable as they are now.
2013 could usher in a new era in which security vendors and IT departments use your employees’ social-networking credentials as part of their identity management environment.
