The latest analysis of job and salary data from Janco Associates presents a mixed bag of results. Overall technology job staffing is heading up, but salaries remain surprisingly flat. For CIOs at large companies, the news is even worse, with a notable average cut in compensation compared to this time last year. Janco reports that a total of 88,900 IT jobs have been added in the last 12 months. However, the forecast for the year ahead is not encouraging, based upon accompanying interviews that Janco has conducted with 96 CIOs. "CIOs are not in a great hurry to hire new staff except to meet short-term needs until they see a clear trend as to what is happening with the economy," says Victor Janulaitis, CEO of Janco Associates. "Two-thirds of the CIOs we interviewed do not see any real push to expand staffing over the next 12 months." (The exception appears to be for computer systems designers, who have seen a surge of demand for their skills.) At the very least, the following salary data should provide helpful guidance with respect to understanding what you can offer IT employees in your department at both managerial and staff-level positions.
