There's much for CIOs to feel optimistic about, and far more of them are planning to expand IT staff, compared to those who anticipate a reduction in their tech department headcount, according to the latest Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Forecast and Local Trend Report. Still, the vast majority of CIOs intend to either put any hiring initiatives "on hold" or stick with filling only currently open tech positions. Overall, the results are encouraging. CIOs remain highly confident of their companies' growth potential, as well as their leadership's support of IT project investment. As for the staffing? Expect this to eventually ramp up, as it becomes clear that strategic recruitment will emerge as key to maintaining a competitive advantage. "We continue to see strong demand for IT workers as companies increase their investment in technology initiatives, including security, data mining and mobile," says John Reed, senior executive director of Robert Half Technology. "Companies are finding it most challenging to recruit technology professionals in specialties such as network administration and database management." More than 2,300 U.S. CIOs took part in the research.
