Here's a trivia question that only a CIO could love: "What's a memristor?" (No googling please, we'll give you the answer at the end of this slideshow.) That said, to provide a hint, it's one of the "Ten Technologies That Might Change Data Centers Forever," as presented by Andy Lawrence, research vice president at 451 Research. The ten innovations highlighted speak to the need for reduced capital and operating expenses without sacrificing data-center functionality. In fact, a few of the technologies promise to significantly increase performance while still arriving at a lower cost. For certain, data centers represent a major budget allocation. In fact, the 15 year Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of a 3 megawatt facility is now $90 million, according to 451 Research. And that is why hybrid generation, cloud computing options, silicon-based advancements, flash storage and even data centers that require no chillers are all in the works. The following insights were part of a presentation at the Uptime Institute Symposium in May in Santa Clara, Calif.
