The Changing Dynamics of Data Storage

What IT Trends Are Impacting Your IT Strategy?  Budget constraints still lead, but data volume and the cloud computing are close behind.  Constricted budgets: 31%, Cloud: 25%, Data Explosion: 25%, Bring Your Own Device: 14%, Other: 6%

A new survey of 568 IT professionals working in organizations with 200 or more employees conducted by NaviSite, a cloud service provider, finds that nearly one-quarter of an organization’s IT budget is now allocated to data storage and that, due to compliance issues, knowing the location of data is becoming a critical issue.

Three-fourths of the organizations said that they have a critical need to know where their data is housed, and nearly half of organizations currently store their data in more than three locations, which presents a range of logistical and security challenges.

For all of those concerns, however, the NaviSite survey also finds that when it comes to storage and data management technologies, pricing remains the number one concern, followed by security.

The findings suggest that given the pressure being applied in the form of IT budgets, more organizations are insisting on higher-quality data storage capabilities at the most aggressive price points possible regardless of the amount of data being stored or the performance requirements being demanded.
