According to Gartner, companies worldwide will spend $9 billion by year's end on application development software, a 1.8 percent increase over 2011.
Gartner predicts that mobile projects for smartphones and tablets will account for 80 percent of all development activities by 2015.
Just 20 percent of AD projects will cater to PCs by 2015.
According to Gartner, having mobile applications, systems, and devices are "one of three top CIO priorities at the enterprise level."
Gartner says that CIOs expect over one-fifth of their employees to use tablets instead of laptops by 2013, marking a dramatic shift in the computing environment.
Gartner also found in its study that open source software will continue to make a strong presence "and create pressure on market leaders" in the next three to five years.
Gartner found that 70 percent of new Java apps will be offered on an open source Java application server by the end of 2017.
Cloud computing is also a major AD driver. According to Gartner, 90 percent of large enterprises will be using cloud computing by 2015.
