Easing IT’s Mobility Management Pain

Zenprise is offering a new version of its MobileManager software that adds selective wipe, remote lifeline and profile features to enhance security in Apple iPhones and iPads used in the enterprise. The offerings are primarily targeted at corporations that have embraced the “employee-liable” model for mobility. This means that employees purchase and pay for their own devices and wireless carrier plans but are permitted to use them to connect to corporate email, calendar and business applications.

This model is becoming increasingly commonplace in the enterprise, although many organizations continue to utilize a “corporate liable” model in which the company pays for and is responsible for maintaining and servicing an employee’s smartphone.

Even in an individual-liable mobility model, IT departments still need a way to manage the use of smartphones to protect sensitive information and secure networks, as well as provide a minimal level of support to employees.

With this in mind, the new Zenprise MobileManager lets IT administrators fashion security profiles for employee-liable and corporate-liable iPhones and iPads. This feature, managed by Active Directory, protects corporate intellectual property in the case of pilfered or lost personal devices.

For example, while IT may require only passwords on employee-liable devices, the corporate-liable profile can be set up to require passwords and restrict Web browsing capabilities; limit or block certain apps; and prevent access to certain Websites, such as Facebook or Twitter.
