Citizen Development Is Spreading Rapidly
A growing number of citizen developers are building custom business applications without code, resulting in better access to data and faster decision making.
The number of application builders within the organizations surveyed rose an average of 38% since last year.
For 76% of the application builders surveyed, citizen development is part of their day job, up from 68% last year.
Customer-facing web and mobile applications are the fastest growing apps being built on citizen development platforms, rising to 35% of application builders from 27% last year.
Citizen development reduces unfulfilled request backlogs by 65%. It also results in faster time to market because applications can be built in less than two weeks for 53% of respondents.
Developing a custom app using traditional development methods takes more than two months, according to 67% of non-customer respondents. 31% of these respondents said it takes six months.
Citizen development platforms can be used to develop 26 different custom applications for a wide variety of uses.

For 79% of the organizations surveyed, the place most likely to find citizen developers is in lines of business, followed by central services at 62% and central IT at 39%.
Among professional developers in central IT organizations, 73% collaborate with citizen developers and business users for whom applications are being built.
The top benefit of no-code citizen development is the ability to maintain and update applications faster than the two-month window that 35% of traditional developers need.
