Want to Engage Employees? Feed 'Em!

In prior features, we've written about how CIOs and other IT leaders struggle to hire qualified tech employees for vacant, mission-critical positions. And, once those staffers are in place, it's difficult to keep them engaged so they remain with the IT department year-after-year. Given these challenges, you always want to gain an extra edge over the competition for talent. But did you ever consider that such an advantage could be provided by … your local grocery store? That's right. Today's employees—especially Millennials—are happier and more energized on the job (thus, more engaged and productive) when their offices are constantly stocked with free, healthy snacks and beverages, according to a recent survey from Peapod.com. Apparently, companies are lacking in the free food department, as a significant share of professionals describe their office fridge and cupboards as wastelands, findings reveal. However, this trend should reverse itself, as organizations recognize the many benefits of providing an eclectic range of nutritious options for their teams. "We're seeing more businesses provide a variety of free food and beverage options—and increasingly they are providing healthy snacks," said Peg Merzbacher, vice president of regional marketing for Peapod. "They have discovered it's a very cost-effective way to keep their employees happy and productive." More than 1,000 U.S. employees took part in the research, which was conducted by ORC International.
