Why IT Leaders Have Too Little Time for Innovation

IT leaders and staff spend far more time maintaining current technology than innovating. This, along with limited budgets, is restraining technology advances.

61% of IT’s time is spent “keeping the lights on,” said the IT pros and decision-makers surveyed, and just 28% is dedicated to innovation, and only 11% is devoted to training and development.

61% said that current strategies to manage modernization requirements are limiting other innovation efforts.

Less than half of the IT pros surveyed said they’re seeing increasing tech budgets throughout a wide range of core investment areas.

Companies that have spent at least 15% of their global revenue on IT have integrated an average of 38% of their tech systems enterprise-wide, while those spending no more than 5% on IT have integrated an average of 19%.

The CIOs surveyed believe that, on average, 43% of their systems are fully integrated enterprise-wide, but vice presidents of IT said that, on average, just 22% are fully integrated.

77% of the CISOs surveyed said security plays a factor in tech adoption decisions, but only 44% of CIOs agreed.

74% of the IT pros and decision-makers surveyed said IT plays a “very important” role in influencing business strategy, and 27% said IT’s role is “critical.”

84% said shadow IT occurs in their organization, and 45% said it takes place in a majority of departments at their company.

59% of the IT pros and decision-makers surveyed said their organization is building its own software in-house to customize apps in order to suit its requirements.
