Intel and Google formally announced an expansive new environmental initiative on June 12, which aims to both promote and usher in the adoption of energy-efficient computers, components and power management tools.

During a press conference at Google headquarters, Urs Hölzle, senior vice president of operations at Google, and Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group, said that by 2010, the new Climate Savers Computing Initiative seeks to reduce global computer-based CO2 emissions by 54 million tons per year, the equivalent of the output of 11 million cars annually.
“Today, the average desktop PC wastes nearly half of its power, and the average server wastes one-third of its power,” said Hölzle during the presentation.
