Contradictory statements from the White House led a federal judge to order the Bush adminstration to collect and preserve e-mails for employees between March 2003 and October 2005.
The White House e-mail archiving efforts have drawn scrutiny since it was discovered that millions of communications in that period are missing.
In his order, U.S. District Court Judge John Facciola cited statements from White House CIO Theresa Payton, who said the White House regularly overwrote backup tapes before October 2003. The White House’s own Office of Administration, however, calls her remarks "simply incorrect."
