The productivity numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in October 2006 sent a shock wave around the country: After showing robust increases for several years, productivity growth had slowed to an annualized 0.0 percent (though that was later revised up to 0.2 percent). Meanwhile, the trailing 12-month figure sat at a paltry […]

All the recruitment and retention issues that affect corporations as a whole—the brain drain, employee restlessness, finding and keeping your best people—also affect corporate IT departments. But IT has some special challenges that set it apart from other business units. First is the problem of recruitment, which has suddenly gotten much more difficult. Says Kate […]

You’ve probably already heard it all: The baby boomers are all going to retire, and corporations of every stripe will face a sudden dearth of both labor and top-level executives to manage it. There aren’t enough younger workers to make up the shortfall, and anyway, they don’t have the experience their older colleagues have. Meanwhile, […]

The history of healthcare IT has not, in general, been a happy one. The industry has consistently underinvested in IT, and thanks to the ongoing misalignment of interests among the patients, providers and payors, it doesn’t look as if increased pooling of efforts and more IT investment will happen any time soon. Still, there are […]

Welcome to CIOInsight.com’s new Innovation Center. Here we will aggregate research, case studies and analysis on the best in corporate innovation. It’s a theme that runs through just about everything we do at CIO Insight. Matthew Szulik, the chairman, CEO and president of Red Hat Inc., began his talk this morning at Ziff Davis Media’s CIO Summit with a video poking fun at some of the many famous technology predictions that went badly wrong. They included Thomas Edison’s conviction that the phonograph had no commercial potential, and that radio was […]

In his keynote speech last night at Ziff Davis Media’s CIO Summit at the Silverado Resort in Napa Valley, Calif., Stuart Varney spoke to the value of consolidation, churn and change, in the U.S. economy and around the world. That’s very much part of the meaning of globalization: Worldwide growth is derived from capital investment, […]

Jeff Hawkins has a lot on his mind-not least, a new theory about how the brain works. And he’s confident his theory will change the entire computing industry. In Silicon Valley, Hawkins is best known as the founder of Palm Computing Inc. and Handspring Inc., and as the mastermind behind the Palm Pilot and Treo […]

It seems that the pirates and counterfeiters of goods and intellectual property are moving up the corporate food chain—quickly. The New York Times reported this morning that a large, well-organized and very (let’s admit it) entrepreneurial shadow-company has been pirating the products of NEC Corp. Not just stuff NEC already makes, mind you: This group […]

This morning the New York Times reported that Suffolk County, on Long Island, is planning a free wireless service similar to the municipal services currently being worked on in Philadelphia, San Francisco and elsewhere. But bigger: The plan would cover all 900 square miles of the county, even the beaches (only Chicago’s 940 square-mile plan […]

Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives’ Energy and Commerce Committee voted to allow big telecom companies, such as Verizon and AT&T, to sidestep local approval for cable-like services. That’s bad enough, but the committee also defeated an amendment to the bill that would strengthen so-called “net neutrality” guarantees, prohibiting telecoms from favoring some Web sites […]

In 2004, renowned economist Jagdish Bhagwati published his highly acclaimed book, In Defense of Globalization (Oxford University Press). As the title suggests, Bhagwati argues strongly for globalization, but he also seeks to balance his viewpoint by considering the social implications of the phenomenon. Bhagwati, who is University Professor of Economics at Columbia University and a […]
