The most valuable developers of custom apps for your organization may not even work in the IT department. That's because the growing presence of employees and managers called "citizen developers" are creating custom apps in a very efficient and business-focused manner, according to a recent survey from FileMaker. The resulting "State of the Custom App Report" reveals that citizen developers are considered top problem solvers: They get the job done and don't wait around for someone else to step up. Most don't have a tech background, and the development of custom apps is generally not a full-time job for them. However, thanks to their efforts, organizations benefit through improved reporting and analysis, inventory and asset management, data integration, and customer and client relations. "There has never been a better time … to transform work," according to the report. "People who embrace improving business processes with technology can successfully create business value. Citizen developers are uniquely positioned to understand what their business and team need, and to create custom apps that solve real problems." An estimated 350 global professionals who describe themselves as citizen developers took part in the research.
